Too much or too little of some things is not good. For example, if we eat too much we may become overweight and develop health problems. If we eat too little, we will become undernourished and could starve to death. Thus, to stay healthy, we must eat in moderation.
Likewise, in order to be spiritually healthy, we must use moderation in the things we allow ourselves to do. God's word gives us guidelines for making decisions on issues where there is no clear-cut commandment that says "thou shalt do or not do a thing". One such guideline is the edification test. Does the thing in question edify others? Although it may be lawful to do a thing, (meaning we won't loose our soul's salvation if you do it) if there is the slightest chance that it will cause someone to stumble spiritually we should not do it.
"Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1Co 10:31). "Let your moderation be known unto all men" (Phil 4:5) and "follow after the things... wherewith one may edify another" (Rm 14:19).
